ANN - Why I Shouldn’t Click the Forum Link in the Articles

By Ace | October 29, 2007

Okay, this is something that has irked me for quite some time and I feel that its about time to address it. Why is it that nearly everyone on ANN’s forums seems to be an elitist bastard who argues to hear themselves speak? Time and time again I’ve clicked on the “discuss this in the forums” link, just out of curiosity to see what everyone is saying about the issues or article, and unless its a “Hey, check out this anime” post (which usually results in little to no discussion unless its a huge series) by the time I get it in the RSS feed, its escalated into a full blown bitchfest between the forum-goers.

I’m not saying everyone on there is this way, some people try to calm the others down, some people just make their one comment and go on, but there are several who will antagonize the opposite side until you have 15 or 20 people in an all out “my beliefs are better than yours” argument. The worst part is, they’ll pick the dumbest things to argue over. I’m not going to cite case and precedent to avoid random pissy commenters, but I’m fairly sure most everyone knows what I’m talking about.

My advice to these forum-goers of ANN, loosen up, and if you’re going to try to debate, actually debate something. A wise man once said that you can’t argue a point if you don’t understand what it is you’re arguing against. I’ll leave it at that comment. Also, just for the record, arguing world politics in an anime forum doesn’t make your E-PeN0R bigger, it just makes you look like a fool.

Now, if someone can validate these arguments to me as actual discussions instead of everyone bitching, I’ll retract my statement. Otherwise, if you’re just going to try to give me the same condescending, juvenile crap I see on there, don’t bother commenting.

Internets, serious business.

And that’s exactly why I stopped going to ANN months ago. It’s just not worth plowing through such annoying posts for the few good stuff. I’ve got much better things to do with my time.

This is why, with the exception of a handful of blogs, I refuse to go any deeper into the anime fandom. Like Mirrinus said, I’ve got better things to do with my time than being yelled at by some otaku.

Time and time again, I’m glad that the first forum I got to know was the Megatokyo Forums (and more specifically, the Anime, Manga and Cosplay forums). While I’m not saying that the same thing that happens in ANN doesn’t happen there, it’s less frequent (usually) and people tend to listen and try to find out why people think the way they do. Or something like that. I’m biased. :P

ANN is annoying to go through since people love talking past each other instead of talking /too/ each other. No real productive discussion gets done that way. :3

@Mirrinus: I don’t mind ANN itself, just their forums. I still use the feed as a source for news, and sometimes I’ll admit I read their forums for the lulz. It reminds me how stupid people can be on both sides of the argument.

@griever: I can understand this. I’ll admit that I surf a lot of blogs and more often than not I just laugh at the dorama.

@TheBigN: ANN forum goers just generally tend to be elitists, that’s all there is to it.
