Myself; Yourself ~Episodes 1-4~
By Ace | October 28, 2007
This series has stolen my heart and is quite possibly my favorite series this season. I’m not entirely sure what it is about it that appeals to me so much, but I think part of it is because I’m a fan of sappy love stories and that’s what this is turning out to be.

First Impressions
I’ll admit, at first I had my doubts about this series, at least in the first 5 minutes of episode 1. The way they were drawn as kids irked me for some reason that I’m still yet to pinpoint. As soon as the violin scene happened right before the OP though, is when I knew that I was going to have to see more.

So essentially, I settled in and continued to watch. I immediately fell in love with the OP. Both the music and the animation sequence to me were wonderful. Part of the reason it took me so long to make a new theme is because I was scouring the internet for a text-less version of the OP so that I could use it, but unfortunately, nothing yet. I’ll probably be changing my banner once it becomes available.

Apologies for the subtitles, I couldn’t seem to find a decent raw either (Credit: m.3.3.w Fansubs)
Okay, so the general plot is a little clichéd. Boy leaves town as a kid, comes back 5 years later and essentially, doesn’t recognize the girl that is (obviously) in love with him. It becomes quickly apparent that Nanaka is the “good end” to the story, but the question for this type of series never has been who the person will end up with, its what happens while they’re getting from point A to point Z, B through Y are where the fun is at.

Of course, as most everyone knows, the general favorite of the series is Aoi-chan. I’m still yet to completely understand why this is the case myself. Sure she’s cute, but I don’t see what makes her so much more appealing that the other characters. I also think its breaking an unwritten rule that Tomoko Kaneda (a.k.a. Chiyo-chan) is voicing such a “well-developed” character. Don’t get me wrong, I still <3 Aoi-chan, I just fail to see why everyone is going crazy about her and not really any of the other characters.

Of course, the “spoiler” scene in the bookstore caused me to have moe-fits all over the place, so who am I to argue?
Then of course, there’s the Wakatsuki twins. They amuse me to no end. You don’t really see too much of them in the first episode though, so I’ll save my thoughts on that for later.

Then there’s Nanaka. Her only “real” appearance in the first episode was at the very end. My first thought is, how did he not recognize her? Granted she had a much colder appearance about her than 5 years before, but everyone else seems to have changed so much more. Either way, the end of the episode just left me wondering what had happened in the 5 years preceding?

Up to date
I’ll be honest, the majority of the first thoughts have been sitting in a text file on my laptop for about a month now, and I’ve just been trying to find time to get the screencaps together and actually finish the “jagged thoughts” I had taken down.
Now, what do I think of this series? As I said, its quiet possibly my favorite series this season (only rivaled by Goshuushou-sama Ninomiya-kun) but I’m still yet to understand why. By far, my favorite girl of this one is Nanaka, I always seem to fall in love with the quiet ones with a story.

But I still love all the characters, the art, everything about it. The series in and of itself is a great change of pace compared to some of the crap that’s been coming out the past few years. As of late we’ve seen nothing but an onslaught of either a)silly comedies that have no real redeeming value or plot point or b)stories with potential that quickly fall off the wagon after it gets rolling. I just hope that Myself; Yourself continues in the same fashion that it has for the first 4 episodes.

What can I say? I have a heroine addiction.
