Nodame Cantabile - Episode 1
By Ace | January 26, 2007
I think I have found my poster series for the season. I finally got around to watching the first episode of this anime (after having it for at least a week) and I must say, wow, I’m in love. For those who don’t know me, I do have a background in music. I’ve played classical piano most of my life, guitar for about 5 years now, and I was a classical and jazz trumpeter in high school (performing in several honored symphonic orchestras I might add). So, this series immediately caught my eye when I was reading over the upcoming season. I wasn’t sure what to expect going into this having not read much on it and also after not seeing the live-action series from last season, so I decided to just not make any prejudices based on it until I saw it for myself.
This series is the second one that I have seen this season thus far, and it has already done a much better job at it than its contender. My predictions? Well, one thing I foresee happening, is Chiaki is in for a huge letdown when/if he gets to meet with his idol. This was brought on by the opening scene. Other than that, I have no idea where this series is headed past the surface idealism.
So far in this series, I see a lot of potential, it could be a very sweet love story, or it could be a story of crushing defeat. It could be a story of two people rising together and helping each other overcome obstacles, or it could be a story of how they hinder each other. The story is still pretty open from the point I’m at, but it seems that it will be a good story no matter what way it goes. Part of the reason I’ve taken to this series so quickly (besides the ties to music) is the characters. They seem more real than a lot of series I have watched in the past few years, with each person having their flaws and advantages. The only thing that I have a problem with is the art. I have never been a huge fan of this particular style of art, but even that kept in mind, it does seem to suit the mood quite well.
I’d say chances are good that you’ll see this series come up several times before I’m finished with it.
